The spirituality of St. Francis de Sales is a “Spirituality of the Heart,” relevant today as in the time of St. Francis de Sales himself - an all-embracing, Down-to-earth Spirituality for everyone.

Among the eminent personalities of the MSFS Congregation, Fr. Antony Mookenthottam is one of the most subtle and profound. He is deeply rooted in the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales, and this provides him with insights into the grandeur of Christian holiness, a prerequisite for a meaningful religious life.

Fr. Antony Mookenthottam was born in Narianganam, near Palai, Kerala, on February 28, 1931, as the sixth child of his parents. He had his philosophical and theological studies at Sacred Heart Seminary, Poonamalle (philosophy: 1949-1952 and theology: 1953-1957). On completing theology, he was ordained a priest on April 27, 1957.

He   derives his ability to combine deep insights into human problems with a humane simplicity from his intimacy with Jesus in prayer. His humane simplicity is manifest in his spontaneous gentleness and humility. His numerous articles and books - while characteristically erudite, subtle, complex, and at times extraordinarily brilliant-are singularly free from any trace of the influence of intellectual fashions and from any sort of posturing or self-exhibition. They are a natural outgrowth of his integrated moral, intellectual, pastoral, and spiritual vision of life and reality, which enable him to be truly open-minded to other cultures, regions, languages, and nationalities. This universal outlook fused with the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales empower him to be a living model of Francis de Sales who was the 'living image of Christ on earth'.

The distinctive character of Fr. Antony's spirituality lies in his integration of morality, intellectuality, and total availability. He has made himself all things to all, an other-centred person indeed. His achievements in various fields have their source and inspiration in his other-centre spirituality.

Fr. Antony has also been an exemplary teacher who explains things with a humane compassion, listens with a studious attitude, and engages in disputations with an impartial mind. His absolute joy in intellectual give-and-take and his delight, with his eyes gently sparkling, in reaching an understanding of a complex issue are infectious. It was indeed my good fortune and great privilege to be able to sit at the feet of Professor Antony Mookenthottam during my theological studies at St. Peter's Pontifical Institute of Philosophy and Theology. He embodies most eloquently the very essence of Indian Christian scholarship; he is and shall always be a living presence of Jesus Christ to anyone who cares to understand him. May he celebrate many more birthdays in the years yet to come.

AD MULTOS ANNOS!

Fr. George Panthanmackel msfs
