An Experience of Fr. General

 

  

 

 

 

  

 

 

During the first two weeks of May 2003, I was in Franco-Swiss Province visiting our confreres and communities. In this province of the birth of our Congregation are enshrined hallowed places and sanctuaries of our Patron, St Francis de Sales and our Founder, Fr Peter Mary Mermier. I prayed for you at the Basilica of the Visitation at Annecy where the relics of St Francis de Sales are kept. I tried to take in the natural scenery of mountains, lakes and valleys that inspired our holy Patron and the Founder to praise and glorify God. Fr Claude Morel took Fr Mayoraz and me to the parish of Chaumont and village of Vovray where Fr Mermier was brought up in the troubled times of the post French-revolution era. The ancestral house that welcomed priests to celebrate the Eucharist hidden from the malicious eyes of the anti-Catholic movement, is still there in its rugged simplicity and ordinariness. There is nothing extraordinary in what we saw. But eyes of faith and hearts of love discover the nobility and sanctity of these places that gave to the world St Francis de Sales and Fr Mermier whose appeal and impact have crossed all frontiers and reached all corners of the earth.

 

Going to Franco-Swiss Province is, in a way, going in search of the roots of the Congregation. History of all good movements is sacred. It is the first concrete truth of their life. My amazing discovery has been that there is fresh life in the roots precious for the Congregation. As the Congregation launches into new missions, projects and ministries, it has a sacred obligation to sustain hope and make this hope fructify through solidarity and support to the Mother Province of the Congregation. On this occasion I join you in paying homage to all our Missionaries from Franco-Swiss Province who dared to share the missionary vision of Fr Mermier and went to spread the Good News to India, England and Brazil.
