When the doctor told John Joseph two years ago that he had lung cancer, he was waiting for death. Two of his five brothers had the disease. He was scared. 'His body wasn't ready but his mind was prepared. "He cried only once.” But John who's 44 and lives in Bangalore, also was ready because this wasn't the first time he'd looked trouble straight in the eye. In 1994 he had a fatal car accident, and after two years of physiotherapy, he turned to God. Instead of asking '"Why me?" John began to ask, '"Why not?" "God loves us all with an everlasting love," he says. '"There are good things and bad things in our lives, and we have to accept both. If we don't, we are not truly loving Jesus, the incarnate Son of God."

 

Certainly, everything that happens to us could be a message. 'What is important is to learn to look at the Divine babe in the manger and do what he tells us. It is not only our prayer that gives him glory but all our works undertaken and sufferings undergone at his behest. Teaching in a school, catechizing in a remote village, attending the sick and suffering, bearing with the shortcomings of others, painting a wall, sweeping, washing, scouring, cooking, writing a book, everything gives God some glory if being in his grace I do it as my duty.

 

The current issue of the Fransalian International highlights small and great works done by the 'Missionaries of St Francis de Sales whose constant endeavour is to render 'glory to God in the highest and peace to humans of goodwill.'
