Training Centres for the Poor in Kenya

St Joseph's Vocational Training Centre at Mlolongo, Kenya, inaugurated on October 2, 2002, has trained 1,330 students in Industrial Sewing Machines, and just over 1,000 are already working at different factories in the vicinity of Nairobi. Recently, we have also started six months' training in manual machines for which there are 34 students. At the completion of the training, in collaboration with UNICEF, we provide a manual machine to each student in order to help one to be self-employed. On January 15, 2005, the second section of the Vocational Training Centre, the computer section, was inaugurated by His Excellency, Frederic Renard, the Ambassador of Belgium to Kenya. This section has a classroom, a lab and a library with the capacity to accommodate about 200 students. Most of them, for the daily two-hour classes (one hour of theory and another of practical), come from Nairobi and its surrounding areas. Another feather in the cap is the establishment of a Primary school at Katani aimed at providing primary education to the poor, orphaned, and marginalized street children from all over Kenya. Apart from all this, the newly erected parish, with above 900 faithful, needs our care and attention.
