As the whole of Southeast Asia is slowly recovering from the worst natural disaster in modern history, the Church in the Philippines just concluded what is widely known as the longest Christmas celebration in the world on a rather somber note, by observing January 9, the Feast of Baptism of Jesus, as the day of nation prayer and mourning for the victims of tsunami. The highlight of the two-month long Christmas season is the observance of the traditional “Dawn Masses” or “Simbang-Gabi” for 9 consecutive days leading to the solemn celebration of Christmas night mass. With lights and decorations at every church, street and courtyard, and with sweet melodies of Christmas songs resounding in the air, it certainly fills the hearts of the faithful with nostalgic feelings for our Saviour.
