In the spring of 1996, Fr. Augustine (Gus) Tharappel, belonging to the Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales, came t Tyler to establish a ministry here in East Texas of the United States of America. I knew, listening to his sermons and hearing him speak, that this was a very unique priest with a very spiritual focus on life. When I heard he was offering classes, I wanted to go, but they were at night, and I had too many obligations in the evening with my family. He then began a class in the meeting room of the Chancery during the day, and I was finally able to attend. These classes were so unique to anything I had experienced before. The focus was on spirituality, and the “why” about our faith and religion. We discussed some church history in order to help us better understand the true intent of the church’s teachings and to start our personal journey towards a more intimate relationship with God. Today there are hundreds of people in the Diocese of Tyler who benefit from the spirituality encountered at Wellspring, and they are sharing their increased faith with their families and community.
