Miracle of Lourdu Matha Feast

There is a miracle behind the Lourdu Matha feast at Yanam in Visakhapatnam, India. In 1943 the existing grotto of our Lady of Lourdes was constructed by then parish priest, Fr. Augustine Ganglof and a beautiful statue of our Lady was installed there, perpetuating a miracle. The following inscription on the marble slab fixed inside the grotto by the side of the altar on the wall reads like this: "In 1943 the American ship 'William B-Ogden' went aground near Sacramento light house. Many efforts were made for a year to re-float her but in vain, until Superintendent Engineer E.H. Sweenly came from America. He came to this church and recited the rosary and very soon the ship was made to leave the shore. In memory of that great event, this grotto was built at the expense of Mr. E.H. Sweenly and his wife Alberta Landry." From this inscription we understand that E.H. Sweenly and Alberta Landry were devout Catholics and devotees of our Lady. When all human efforts failed they trusted in God and his power, and asked the help of our lady of Lourdes to help them. Since then the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes has been celebrated here in Yanam with great fervour and enthusiasm.
