Emergency Help by the MSFS

 

as the rains battered Andhra Pradesh

In the months of September-October 2005, two consecutive cyclones hit Andhra Pradesh, India, causing havoc to the life of ordinary people. It was not only the cyclone but also the incessant and merciless downpour of rain that aggravated the flood situation all the more. Several districts - East and West Godavari, Krishna, and Visakhapatnam of costal Andhra Pradesh – were battered by torrential rains. Nearly 90,000 persons had been evacuated from low-lying areas of these districts. The MSFS Mission stations like Tanuku, Attili, Ajitsinghnagar and Ibrahimpatnam were badly affected. Flood-water filled several villages engulfing houses and washed away crops.

  

 

 

  

Water entered the presbytery at Ibrahimpatnam and Fr Pratap, the Parish Priest of Ibrahimpatnam, had to take shelter in the nearby school. Part of our land in Nunna was washed away uprooting trees and inundating the whole area. After the cyclone, our fathers at these centres took several measures to provide emergency help to those people without food, shelter and drinking-water for days. Through Sevakendra we tried to help them in whatever way possible. Those who have lost their houses and property are in need, not only of material support but also of moral and spiritual assistance so that they can rebuild their lives.
