The Dark Continent with a Bright Future

Fr. Augustine Mangatt msfs

In history we see historians considering Africa as the Dark Continent. Many thought that it is because the people are dark in colour, but in fact it was because the outside world did not know much about Africa. The arrival of European and Arab traders and Christian missionaries paved the way for exposing Africa to the outsiders.

Ever since the arrival of Christian Missionaries, Christianity had a deep impact on the people and it has taken deep root in some areas and grown rapidly especially in the sub-Saharan part of the continent. The high percentage of the Christian presence in many sub-Saharan countries is an indication of deep penetration of Christianity in Africa and giving us a new ray of hope for the future as we see low percentage of Church attendance in the traditional Christian countries.

However we should remember that Christianity is relatively new to Africa (the orthodox and oriental Christian communities in Africa are not ignored) and the depth of their faith need to be strengthened.   It is the work of the priests and religious to help them to deepen their faith which they have received through the zealous missionaries of the past.

It is time for us to think in terms of quality rather than quantity. Consider the words of our patron "A spoonful of honey can catch more flies than a barrel of vinegar". If our fellow Christians from African Continent have to become like honey they have to grow deeper in their faith and we have a great role to play in it. Prayer coupled with our exemplary life can be one of the ways of deepening their faith. What else can we offer them to bring them into a deeper experience of Christ Jesus?

As MSFS with Fransalian Charism it is time for us also to reflect new ways and means of deepening the faith of the people and proclaiming the word to those thousands who have not yet known about Jesus and his love. May God our Father help each one of us to live up to our commitment and deepen our Spirituality using all means that are at our disposal.

Fr. Augustine Mangatt msfs
