News from South Africa and Namibia

It all started just like that…….

The Fransalian Mission in Southern part of the Africa namely,

in South Africa and Namibia is yet another missionary enterprise about which every Fransalian can be proud of.

It was a simple beginning.

In the year 1994 Bishop John Minder osfs, now the bishop emeritus of Keimoes-Upington extended an invitation to our former Superior General Very Rev. Fr. Emile Mayoraz, to send some missionaries to work in his diocese as the diocese was in need of priests. In response to the invitation in 1995 Fr. Augustine Mangatt, the general councillor, made a visit to the diocese of Keimoes-Upington and gave a positive reply to the Superior General. In the yeare1996, Superior General with the approval of his Councillor’s entrusted this new venture of the Congregation to the North East India Province. Responding to the request of the General, by the end of 1997, the provincial administration of NE India Province designated Rev. Frs. Philip Mangatt, Joseph Kunjaparambil and Babychen Arackathara to plant our Congregation in Southern Africa.

It was a leap into the Unknown: On the 22nd of July 1998, the first batch of MSFS Fathers landed in Windhoek [Namibia] International Airport, to be received by the VG of Keetmanshoop Diocese. They spent a week in Keetmanshoop, later to be dispersed in to three different directions to know the unknown Dark Continent. First Parish for MSFS in Namibia: On the 8th of Dec. 1998, after four months of language course and getting familiar with the people and local culture, the Fathers were sent to Bethanie, the promised Parish for MSFS.

Five Years later …….

May 28, 2003 was a day to go down to the annals of the history of our congregation. At the presence of all the confreres working in this Region and the visiting Mozambique Team, Fr. Job Karikkampally is officially installed as the First Regional Superior of this New Region.

Again historical moments ….

The First ever Regional Assembly of the Southern African MSFS was held at Pastoral Centre, Keetmanshoop in Namibia from 29th Sept-2nd Oct. 2003, under the banner- "Fransalians Towards Renewal in Religious Life for effective Ministry in South Africa." Those were the memorable days of communion with the Lord and with one another; days of sharing joys and anxieties; strengthening the bonds of commitment for a more effective apostolate; in short days of abundant grace!

Regional Assembly 2003

In the Regional Assembly Rev. Frs. Philip Mangatt and KP Joseph were elected as the Regional Councillors to assist the Regional Superior.
