From the Editors

With great sense of delight we place in your hands the third issue of Out of Africa. Your valuable feedbacks and encouraging pats concerning the previous issues, motivate us to venture it again. We are very happy to know that it serves as an effective means of making known the apostolate and the activities of the Fransalians in Africa to the other confreres, to our friends and well wishers and to any one who is interested in associating with us. OOA has a Fransalian Identity. In a simple and down-to-earth manner it highlights various topics and events that are interesting and inspirational to the readers. Besides OOA acts a link of unity and symbol of collaboration among the various Fransalian Missions throughout Africa.

The challenge for the Fransalians in Africa today is to partake in the mission of the Church to ensure the Reign of God in the heart of every human being. Two years ago, the then Holy Father Pope John Paul II announced a second African Synod of Bishops (first one was in the year 1994). Now the preparations are in progress. The Lineamenta is being circulated. Happily the theme of the Synod directs itself to Social justice in Africa and role of the Church in it.

Since the first synod, the number of Catholics - both consecrated and lay - has increased; certain steps have been taken in the matters of inculturation; and there is a growing movement towards greater self-reliance and the assertion of an African self-confidence. The dynamics of globalization have evolved. Of course, there remain acute difficulties that continue to undermine continental optimism both at the secular as well as ecclesial level. The Aids pandemic is threatening to kill Africa’s youth; poverty remains prevalent; ethnic wars are yet to be eradicated. In this context comes the second Synod.

Let us hope that the coming Synod will be an opportunity for Africa’s People of God to share their experiences, perspectives and visions. It is in the process of such discourse that the Church in Africa can meet to find a common hope, strategy and growth enabling the Kingdom of God to sink deep into the heart of every human being. As Fransalians and lovers of Africa let us join them!

Have a good time with Out of Africa!
