Brasil: A Gigantic Chablais

In 1940 Brazil was 95.2% Catholic and only 2.6% Protestant. Today it is 80% Catholic and 13% Protestant, mainly pentecostal. A large number of Brazilian Catholics are Catholics of context. A child born in a Catholic family is baptized catholic. Religious education is limited to the preparation for the First Holy Communion. In public schools religion is not taught. In private schools, frequented mostly by upper middle class, religious formation is not a concern. Most are Catholics of context. Brazil could be considered a gigantic Chablais. St Francis de Sales had the mission of converting former Catholics-turned-Calvinists into Catholics by choice. The mission in Brazil is how to convert Catholics of context into Catholics of option.

However, the Brazilians are a people of faith. When they pass a church or when players enter the field, they cross themselves. But it is a faith based on devotion to saints. There are saints for each human need - St Jude for desperate cases, St Anthony to find lost objects and to get married, St Luzia for eyesight, St Edwiges for those in debt. The main challenge for the clergy is to instil a faith based on the Word of God. Christian values of honesty, faithfulness to obligations are yet to be cultivated.

New Venture: The present Archbishop of Londrina, Dom Albano Cavalin, is a great enthusiast of St Francis de Sales. He is a member of the Association of the Priests of St Francis de Sales. To popularize the spirituality of St Francis de Sales, he has invited the MSFS to work in Londrina.
