History of the Province of North-east India
The
Province of North-east India of the MSFS owe its indebtedness to the
Province of Visakhapatnam, for it is the Province of Visakhapatnam which
sent its valiant sons to the North-east India. As the number of priests
increased in the Province of Visakhapatnam, it always of thought of
venturing out into areas where there was acute need for priests. In the
seventies, Fr. Antony Mookenthottam was studying in Europe and Bishop
Joseph Mittathany SDB of the Tezpur Diocese [Assam, India], a seminary
mate of Fr. Antony, was in contact with him. The bishop was willing to
offer a part of his diocese in the district of Nowgong on the southern
side of Brahmaputra river to the MSFS for missionary activities. At the
same time, Fr. Devasia Kuzhupil, one of the Provincial Councillors of
the Province of Visakhapatnam was contacting Bishop Orestes Marengo, the
veteran missionary bishop of North East India, who was then in charge of
the new diocese of Tura, Meghalaya.
