The Global Mission of the MSFS

Fired with a desire for the foreign missions by an atlas with which he whiled away the time in the Roman offices, Fr. Mermier decided he would like to send some of his missionaries to preach the gospel in Africa.

His offer was accepted by the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. However, the mission team he appointed was despatched by Rome to the mission-fields of India.

The first batch of MSFS landed in Pondicherry on 8th September 1845 and the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples entrusted the vicariate of Visakhapatnam to the MSFS on 2nd May 1848.

Some Important Dates

The confreres in France and Switzerland were directly under the Superior General till 1959. It became a Region in 1960 and a province in 1965.

The first batch of MSFS reached Visakhapatnam on 19th February 1846. There was only one Region till Nagpur was bifurcated and made into a new Region in 1888. Both the Regions became provinces in 1965.

The MSFS went to England in 1861. They became a Region in 1940 and in 1965 a province.

The Mission in Brasil was started in 1926. Later it became a Region and in 1965 a province.

MSFS went to North-east India in 1975. In 1984 it became a Vice-province and in 1990 a province.

MSFS began to work in East Africa in 1988 and in 1996 a province was erected there.

American Mission became autonomous in 1990.

South-west India Province was carved out of Visakhapatnam province in 1991.

The erstwhile M.G. Province was bifurcated in 1996 and two provinces, Nagpur and Pune were erected.

The Philippines Mission was opened in 1993.

Chilean Mission was started in 1994.

MSFS went to Namibia in 1998, South Africa and Chad in 1999 and Mozambique in 2000.

Generalate was shifted from Annecy to Rome in July 2002.

Establishment of Southern African Region consisting of South Africa and Namibia under the Province of North-east India on 28th May, 2003.

Poland Mission under Franco-Swiss Province started in 2003.

Establishment of Tamilnadu-Pondicherry Region under the Province of Visakhapatnam on 24 January 2005.
