The Spiritual Directory of
St. Francis de Sales
A
Spiritual Guide for the Laity
with a
commentary by Joseph E. Woods OSFS
With the recent renewal of emphasis on the importance of
the Lay Apostolate, it is quite appropriate that the
writings of St. Francis de Sales should receive greater
attention. His invaluable suggestions concerning prayer
and meditation are as practicable for the busy man and
woman of today as they were for those who followed them
in the sixteenth century.
The Spiritual Directory will prove a very useful guide
for anyone wishing to strive for perfection through the
sanctification of his daily round of duties and
obligations. Event he most ordinary life can express
the prayer:
LIVE +
Jesus!
Advice on
the Directory
The Directory does indeed
propose quite a number of exercises, but it is proper
and worthwhile in the beginning to keep minds regulated
and occupied. When, however, sufficient time has elapsed
and souls have been trained, then it is that these
practices must be resolved into one of greater
simplicity. Thus multiplicity may be reduced to unity.
